Is Turkey about to join the EU?

Turkey is not about to join the EU in the foreseeable future. Although it formally began accession negotiations in 2005, talks have ground to a halt, with just one of the 35 negotiating chapters concluded. In June 2018, the EU’s General Affairs Council concluded talks had ‘effectively come to a standstill and no further chapters can be considered for opening or closing’. All member states must agree before new countries can join the EU.
