What is the Northern Irish border issue?

The border on the island of Ireland (that separates the UK from the Republic of Ireland) will become an external border of the EU after Brexit. The challenge is to ensure that this border remains invisible and all parties are committed in principle to ensuring that there is no return to the hard border of the past. Differences emerge, however, on what this means and how the agreed outcome can be achieved in practice.
