Who is Angela Merkel?

Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany (equivalent to Prime Minister). She has held the post since November 2005 and is the second-longest serving Chancellor in the history of modern Germany. Ms Merkel resigned as leader of her party, the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), in 2018 and is expected to step down as Chancellor at or prior to the next federal election in 2021.
