What “Brexit means Brexit” means to citizens

Overview

This project examined people’s attitudes towards Brexit, and the identities that have emerged, in the aftermath of the referendum on Britain’s membership on the European Union in June 2016. This vote gave the government a mandate to leave the European Union, but gave far less guidance on what the Brexit settlement should look like. This study examined people’s views on what kind of Brexit is desirable and legitimate and how the Brexit divide had produced a new division in society. One of the key findings of the project has been to establish that the EU referendum has triggered strong identities along Brexit lines. These new identities shape how people view the consequences of Brexit.
