What are Directorates-General?

Directorates-General (DGs) are departments within the European Commission that develop and implement EU policies across a range of areas, from agriculture to trade. Each DG is headed by a commissioner, who sits within the College of Commissioners and is the political leader of the department. DGs also have a permanent civil service, led by directors-general.
