Who are the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE)?

The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) are liberal, centrist grouping within the European Parliament, of which the British Liberal Democrats are a member. Following the 2019 European Parliament elections, ALDE is the third-largest grouping in the Parliament, with 105 seats (out of 751), up from 69 seats in the previous Parliament.

However, a coalition of right-wing forces may be able to form a larger group during negotiations prior to the new parliamentary session beginning on 2 July 2019. ALDE has been bolstered by the relative success of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance Coalition in France, which won 21 seats in the 2019 elections, as well as that of the Liberal Democrats in the UK, which won 16 seats.
