How many people live in the EU?

According to Eurostat, on 1 January 2020, the population of the European Union (EU) with 27 member states was estimated at 448 million, down from 514 million on 1 January 2019, when the UK was still a member state. The EU27 population grew by 900,000 inhabitants during 2019, due to net migration. Germany is the largest EU country, with a population of 83 million, while Malta is the smallest, with a population of 514,000.
