Who is Charles Michel?

Charles Michel is the President of the European Council. He is the third person to have held the post after it was created as part of the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. The President is elected by a qualified majority of EU leaders for a renewable two-and-a-half-year term. Mr Michel will come up for re-election in mid-2022. Before becoming President, Mr Michel served on the European Council for five years in 2014-19 as the Prime Minister of Belgium.
