Who is Ursula von der Leyen?

Ursula von der Leyen is a Christian Democrat politician who was elected as the president of the European Commission in 2019, taking over from president Jean-Claude Juncker. Her term began on 1 December 2019 and will run for the EU’s five-year legislative period to 31 October 2024. Prior to taking up the post, she was the German defence minister from 2013, serving under German chancellor Angela Merkel.
