Random and Reason appear to be opposites. But in combination they provide the answer to the elusive question ‘what is a good democratic system?’ And, strangely enough, people in Northern Ireland seem to like the idea a Random + Reason based democracy. John Garry is Professor of Political Behaviour at Queen’s University. His research focuses on various aspects of democracy: elections, referendums and citizens’ assemblies.
