Size of government majorities in the House of Commons

How has the government fared when dealing with the House of Commons during the Brexit process?

This chart demonstrates that, on contested votes on Brexit motions and legislation, the government has lost 24 times between the introduction of the EU (Withdrawal) Bill in September 2017 and the third reading vote on the European Union (Withdrawal) (No.6) Bill in September 2019.

The defeats have ranged from a record-breaking 230-vote deficit in the first meaningful vote on the Withdrawal Agreement to single-vote defeats, including the first time that MPs passed legislation mandating the government to request an extension of the Article 50 period in April 2019.
